A Turnbull restored Winchester model 1866 with Cody letter is one of the many fine examples of lever action Winchesters offered in Alderfer’s 2-day firearms and militaria sale starting on Oct 28th. The sale includes a wide selection of fine sporting & military guns. Include in the former category are a Winchester model 1894 carbines and rifles, several 1866 saddle ring carbines, model 71’s and a Winchester 1886 deluxe takedown rifle. Among the other sporting arms offered is an Ithaca SKB model 280 side by side in 20 GA. Civil war guns in the catalog include a rare Green’s patent bolt action percussion rifle and A spencer 1860 carbine. A separate catalog on October 28th focuses on ammunition and collectible ammunition boxes and a third catalog on the 29th includes firearms accessories and taxidermy. IMPORTANT HONOURABLE EAST INDIA COMPANY AWARD SWORD AT ADAMS, OCT 14th
Sometimes a single lot in a general sale is worthy of comment. Such is the case here with Adams Dublin selling a rare and important Naval award sword. The 300-guinea sword was presented by the Honorable East India Company to Lieutenant-Colonel Barry Close (later Major-General Sir Barry Close, Bt., 1756–1813). It is a dress small-sword of stirrup-hilt form, crafted in 18-carat gold, finely enameled and set with diamonds, bearing London hallmarks for 1800–01.It was ade by John Ray and James Montague, and commissioned by Green & Ward, London, The inner face is engraved within a laurel border with a presentation inscription recognizing Close’s ability, zeal, and energy as Adjutant General during the brilliant and successful Mysore campaign of 1799, under Lieutenant General Harris. It carries and estimate of 300,00-400,000 Euros
