Sometimes a single lot in a general sale is worthy of comment. Such is the case here with Adams Dublin selling a rare and important Naval award sword. The 300-guinea sword was presented by the Honorable East India Company to Lieutenant-Colonel Barry Close (later Major-General Sir Barry Close, Bt., 1756–1813). It is a dress small-sword of stirrup-hilt form, crafted in 18-carat gold, finely enameled and set with diamonds, bearing London hallmarks for 1800–01.It was ade by John Ray and James Montague, and commissioned by Green & Ward, London, The inner face is engraved within a laurel border with a presentation inscription recognizing Close’s ability, zeal, and energy as Adjutant General during the brilliant and successful Mysore campaign of 1799, under Lieutenant General Harris. It carries and estimate of 300,00-400,000 Euros
